If you are just starting a business, there is going to be a lot to learn. One of the most important things to learn is search engine optimization (SEO). There are many reasons for this. One, is because it is the way you get your website ranked. If you can not get search engine rankings, no one will be able to find your site among the millions and millions of sites on the web.

There are many new things you will have to learn about Internet marketing to become successful, and this is one of them. Another is, learning how to do research.

You need to have a very strong SEO strategy for your website. If it is not set up the right way, you will be wasting a lot of time and energy, for no results. Plus, it could save you some setbacks when the search engines make big changes their algorithms, which hurt a lot of work from home business owners.

Here is a simple SEO strategy that should work well, but you should add or change parts of it to suit your needs.

1.Market Research

This includes keyword and product research. With keyword research, you need to find the keywords you will use for SEO on your website. Find keywords in the mid-range competition, they will be easier to get ranking that way.

You can use some of the keyword finder tools available on the Internet, like the Google keyword tool or the free version of Traffic Travis.

You will also need to research products or services to promote on your website.

Lastly, you need to check out the competition for your keywords. Do reverse engineering on the top 10 websites in your niche (for your keywords). Check out their Page Rank and Backlinks, so you can see if your can break onto the Page One results page.

2.Build a Website

Sometimes you will find an affiliate program in you niche that offers a great product to sell and build a website for you.

If not, you can easily build your own website using the WordPress platform. All you will need to do is buy a domain name and get hosting for your website.

3.On Page Optimization for your website

With on-page optimization, you will need to incorporate one or more of your keywords in the title (Name for your website). But, it needs to look natural, not just a bunch of keywords.

Use your keywords in the content of your website. For an article of 400-500 words in length (about 3-5% of the article words), include your keywords about 5-6 times. Using to many keywords will make it look spammy, and therefore hurt your SEO efforts.

Also, optimize any other pages of your website – if it is longer than one page.

The content on your website needs to be new and unique, or entertaining, and/or informative. Write your own articles to start with. DO NOT plagiarize articles written by other people.

Again, use your keyword density (3-5% of the total words of your article).

Use images if you have some within your article.

Set aside a couple of days a week for article writing. The search engine like a lot of new content on websites.

5.Off-Page Optimization for your website (Backlinks)

This probably will take to most time, but it has to be done. There are many ways to get backlinks to your website. Here are a few of the most popular ways:

  • Social Bookmarking
  • Blog Commenting
  • Forum Posting
  • Social Media
  • Web 2.0 Sites
  • Press Releases
  • Article Marketing  (Ezine Articles / Blog Network Syndication Programs)

Never stop building backlinks to your site. It is a great way to increase your rankings and keep your competition from getting your spot in the SERPs (search engine results pages).

Always track your progress in getting rankings. Use the Google Analytics tool to analyze what is happening with your site.
